Leave it to a good friend to finally provided me the opportunity to review a beer I should have done a long time ago.  This is a beer that I have had many times before and a beer that I know I like very much.  I was actually a bit surprised to look back and find out that I somehow had neglected to formally review it until today.

This beer review also allowed me to find a little hole in my grading system as the final grade initially ended at 43.5 and landed it squarely between A- and A.  Since that situation was not accounted for in my system and since this beer is quite good I simply went back and bumped the aroma grade by .5 to land it an A.  I have that kind of power here.

For the very first review of August . . .

Brewery: Brewery Ommegang (Cooperstown, NY)

Name: Witte

Style: Witbier

ABV: 5.10% (on bottle)

Tasting Notes: Stored in the fridge and served in a French Jelly Glass.  Received as a gift.

Aroma: Nicely sweet aroma with some floral and citrus notes.  The coriander and orange notes are not at all too perfumey.  Light and very pleasant overall.   – 10.5/12

Appearance: Pale golden yellow/straw in color.  One finger fluffy white head that holds well and leaves nice lacing along the glass.  Beautifully cloudy, but some some rising bubbles are still visible. – 3/3

Flavor: Light honey-like sweetness with a little bit of wheat flavor and a nice hit of orange as well.  Very faint spice notes and very, very little bitterness.  Finishes lightly dry with a bit or tartness and some lingering sweetness.  – 17/20

Mouthfeel: Light body and a moderate level of carbonation that lends some nice crispness.  The creaminess on the palate does add some fullness. – 4.5/5

Overall Impressions: The spiciness and floral notes of the coriander are at a perfect level for my palate.  A very crisp, refreshing, and enjoyable beer with a light tartness/dryness that is so good.  Not bad as it warms, but is certainly better cold.  I could drink these and day and especially so in warm weather.   – 9/10

Overall: A (44/50)

Looking back at the notes for this beer review (though it was not that long ago), I believe this is an example that reinforces the idea that I should be doing my evaluations per the BJCP point system rather than letter grades. I don’t know if this one would have graded out higher, but it would have had a better chance to do so if graded against the style guidelines rather than just my palate. My enjoyment of Witbiers (and wheat bases beers in general) is somewhat limited, so my biases likely affect my final grades for those type of beers.

Fortunately (for me at least) I am pretty much through my backlog of reviews and will be starting with a new format of grading in the fairly near future.

Now the Tuesday review for this short work week . . .

Brewery: Abita Brewing Company (Abita Springs, LA)

Name: Satsuma Harvest Wit

Style: Witbier (maybe also Fruit Beer)

ABV: 5.10%

Tasting Notes: Stored in the fridge and served in a pilsner glass.

Aroma: Light honey-like sweetness with a bit of graininess in the aroma. Also a slight citrus character and some low spice/herb notes.

Appearance: Light golden (straw-like) color. One finger, foamy, white color head with good retention and leaving a solid trail. Hazy/cloudy though clear enough to see rising bubbles.

Flavor: Some slight sweetness up front with faint citrus notes and light tartness after that. Flavor fades to a fairly dry and crisp finish with maybe a hint of spice noticed after the finish.

Mouthfeel: Light body with a pretty high level of carbonation that lends some bite. Creamy and somewhat smooth on the palate.

Overall Impressions: Aroma to me is much better (more pleasant) than the flavor turned out to be. The flavor falls pretty flat after it first hits the tongue (not much too it). Refreshing and very drinkable – good for enjoying in warm weather.

Grade: C+ to B- area

Receiving craft beer from others is great for a handful of reasons. Other than the being free part (which is always great), it very often leads to the opportunity to try and evaluate a beer that has not been in my house before. As much as I try obtain beers of different styles and from different breweries I think that very often I lean on my preferences, though at least somewhat unconsciously. Gladly I have good friends who help me round out my home drinking options.

For this Tuesday evening review . . .

Brewery: Barons Brewing Company (Australia)

Name: Lemon Myrtle Witbier

Style: Witbier

ABV: 4.50%

Tasting Notes: Stored in the fridge and served in a pilsner glass. 12oz bottle via gift from Mr. Lynch.

Aroma: Moderate sweetness with a slight wheat character in back. Clean, lemony nose with some tartness and with a low spiciness.

Appearance: Pale straw to honey in color. Thick, tall, foamy, white color head that has good retention and leaves some laced trail. Slightly hazy with tons of rising bubbles visible.

Flavor: A prominent citrusy (lemon) sweetness with a wheat character in back that finishes somewhat dry and slightly tart/sour.

Mouthfeel: Light body with a high level of carbonation that is light on the tongue without lending any bite. Slight creaminess and somewhat crisp on the palate.

Overall Impressions: Very light and delicate in both body and flavor. Clean drinking though the lemon flavor would wear on my palate (drink maybe two of them). The tartness/sourness builds as the glass empties and I enjoyed it less the more I drank.

Grade: C+
