After getting the more negative reminiscing out of the way last week (starting last Monday), this week I will take a look back at a handful (or more) of beers that I have fond memories of or that I would really like to revisit.  It really didn’t take much time to pick out the ones for this week either.  I am sure that there are a few that I missed and that probably belong in one of these posts, but they will just be for another look back some other time.

I am going to kick of the week with a beer that I often think of as one of the beers that opened my eyes a bit wider to the world of craft beer.  It wasn’t the only one and not necessarily my favorite of the beers I tried early on, but for some reason I remember it and where I bought it after first moving to Florida.

I am pretty certain that I have not had this beer since doing this review quite a long time ago.  Maybe it is time to pick up a six-pack just because.  Click on the photo below to see what I thought of it on that day . . .

Though I sampled my way through quite a few different beers during my recent trip to Syracuse this is the only one that I actually wrote any notes on and it just happened to be the last full beer I had.  It was far more important and enjoyable to spend real quality time with friends and family rather than to devote any time to evaluating what I was tasting.  Maybe tomorrow I will do a little pictorial recap of the other beers that I was exposed to over that long weekend.

Oh and my meal at Dinosaur BBQ was awesome as usual.  I have still had no better BBQ anywhere else and I always look forward to getting my fix each time I visit CNY.

Switching up the weekly schedule a bit today . . .

Brewery: Middle Ages Brewing Co. (Syracuse, NY)

Name: Wailing Wench

Style: American Strong Ale

ABV: 8.00% (brewery website)

Location: Dinosaur BBQ (Syracuse, NY)

Tasting Notes:

  • Deep amber to brown in color.  Short cream color head with great retention that leaves a solid trail along the glass.
  • Toasted malt on the nose with a seemingly floral hop character underneath.
  • Toasty, slightly biscuity malt character with some floral/herbal hop flavor and a really nice hop bitterness that lingers through the finish.  Well balanced between the two.
  • Medium body and pretty creamy on the palate with a moderate to low level of carbonation.
  • Nice beer.  Probably was a little too big to have as my first of the day, but really tasty.  Gets even better as it warms a bit and I could see myself having a few of these for sure.

When collecting a few bottles of beer here and there I never really put much thought into the order that they would ultimately appear here.  However after seeing everything in the refrigerator I start to pair beers off and that is why I have a second Lagunitas review for this week.  I suppose if I really had my act together I likely could have done an entire month instead of just one week.

Easing into the weekend with . . .

Brewery: Lagunitas Brewing Company (Petaluma, CA)

Name: Undercover Investigation Shut-Down Ale

Style: American Strong Ale

ABV: 9.87% (on bottle)

Tasting Notes: Stored in the fridge and served in a snifter.

Aroma: Deep, fairly sweet aroma of dark fruit (raisins) with some fruity hop notes floating underneath.  Full, but not that big overall. – 8/12

Appearance: Full, rich, coppery amber color.  Slight cream color head that is pretty thick with good (or at least decent) retention, leaving a solid trail along the glass.  Quite clear with lots of tiny rising bubbles visible.  – 3/3

Flavor: Some bitterness up front over a pretty sweet malty base that is almost sugary.  Pretty thin and light in overall flavor, allowing the boozy warmth to come through a little bit too much.  Finishes smooth with some light bitterness and lingering sweetness. – 13/20

Mouthfeel: Medium body with a fine carbonation that gives the impression of it being a little low.  Pretty smooth on the palate, though the warmth is definitely there toward the finish. – 3/5

Overall Impressions: A little disappointed in this one overall or at least I am certain that this is not one of my favorite Lagunitas offerings.  Smooth and warming, but without much depth in flavor.  I am not sure if more carbonation would have helped, but I am sure that this is definitely one to drink a little on the warmer side.  – 6/10

Overall: 33/50
