It is always interesting to go back and review a bottled beer after being exposed to it for the first time on draft.  The same can be said when having a beer on draft after already evaluating the beer from a bottle.  In many cases for me the draft version is preferred, but there is no way that can be my universal judgment as I think that environment always plays into how I view a beer.  I am not about to pretend that my kitchen and living room are a better beer environment than Max’s where I had this beer for the first time.

Mention must also be made that The Wife loves this beer, agreeing with my grade as she enjoys the finish and level of bitterness.

Now to close the week . . .

Brewery: Lagunitas Brewing Co. (Petaluma, CA)

Name: Wilco Tango Foxtrot

Style: (American) Strong Ale?

ABV: 7.83%

Tasting Notes: Stored in the wine fridge (52 degrees or so) and served in an oversized wine glass.  Limited release.

Aroma: Rich, full (fruity, somewhat floral) hop aroma with some underlying caramelly sweetness.  Really nice overall aroma to the point where I want a candle that smells like it.

Appearance: Amber to brown color.  Slight, dark cream color head that holds well and leaves a solid trail.  Very clear with few small, slowly rising bubbles visible.  Head was more full and creamy when the rest of the bottle was poured in.

Flavor: Low, but nice hop flavor (estery/floral) up front with a moderate amount of hop bitterness from middle through the finish.  The underlying maltiness has a toasty/caramelly character.  Some slight dryness at the finish that lingers lightly with the hop bitterness.  All components are well balanced into the whole.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with seemingly moderate to low carbonation (though volatile when swirled).  Very smooth and creamy with some light warmth toward/after finish.

Overall Impressions: A bit mellower than I remember it being on draft at Max’s as I recall the hops being more prominent.  Both are nice.  A very enjoyable beer to sit and relax with, only getting better as the glass empties and the beer comes toward room temperature.

Now a bit closer

It seems that I have found another beer review for a 2009 release after thinking that I had taken care of them all.  I don’t believe that there will be a 2010 version of this one, but I will put it out there just in case it makes a comeback one of these years (and just because I have it).

If I have not mentioned it previously, unless I say otherwise the beer review was done when the beer was supposed to be consumed.  This one, for example, was done last year.  Though not as much recently, I have a tendency to review many more beers than I can post on the site only doing so twice a week.  Of course I could share more evaluations each week (and sometimes I do), but there are others things that I like to post about as well.  Not exactly a disclaimer, but it clears things up some for those who were curious.

Now on we go . . .

Brewery: Lagunitas Brewing Co. (Petaluma, CA)

Name: 2009 Correction Ale

Style: American IPA

ABV: 6.33%

Tasting Notes: Stored in the fridge and served in a pint glass.  $3.99 for 22oz.

Aroma: Fruity hop aroma (that seems to have somewhat of a strawberry character) and some underlying sweetness.  A good, full nose overall.

Appearance: Medium golden color with some orange tint.  Two finger, slightly off-white head that is thick and slowly dissipates with a laced trail.  Very clear with visible rising bubbles.

Flavor: Medium hoppy flavor that is slightly fruity with some resiny character.  Also a medium hop bitterness with some low malty flavor underneath.  Overall pretty well balanced with some slight dryness and just enough lingering at the finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium to light body with medium to high carbonation that provides some bite.  Slight creaminess and smooth overall.

Overall Impressions: Enjoyable IPA with not too much bitterness in the flavor.  Not my favorite of their brews, but that is hardly an insult.  Excellent value at price point, as usual.

Grade: B to B+

The picture was lost with so many others, but just look for the dog with a spot over his left eye and you will be in Lagunitas land.  You will be in a good spot to pick out something else since this one is long gone!

There has never been a reason for me to take pictures of a beer that I have already done a review for.  Then again there has never been a reason for me to take pictures of beer at all, but I am too far gone on that one.  Since I tend not to know that I am missing a picture for a beer until I go to type up the evaluation, maybe it makes sense for me snap photos of beers that travel through the house for a second time (or third or fourth or fifth time)?

There really is not a better name for this beer.  It is overflowing with hoppiness in the aroma and flavor though somehow is not overwhelming to the palate.  With the beer being as good as it is the price should really vault it a full letter grade on my scale (which would put it off the scale completely).  I often tell others that Lagunitas beers are among (if not) the best value out there and this is a prime example.

Brewery: Lagunitas Brewing Co. (Petaluma, CA)

Name: Hop Stoopid Ale

Style: Imperial IPA

ABV: 8.0%

Tasting Notes: Stored in the fridge and served in an oversized wine glass/snifter.  $3.99 for 22oz.

Aroma: Intense, fruity hop aroma (that seemingly has notes of pineapple/mango/apricot) with a slightly sweet malty background.

Appearance: Light amber color with some orange tint.  Slight (not much) off-white head that slowly dissipates with no trail.  Very clear with some rising bubbles visible.

Flavor: Prominent hop flavor that is much the same as the aroma, though not as strong as it implies.  There is some slight bitterness and a low level of maltiness in the background that helps to create a well balanced overall flavor.  Some slight dryness at the finish though not lingering.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with a moderate amount of carbonation.  Very smooth on the palate with a very slight warmth noticeable.

Overall Impressions: Absolutely tremendous, intoxicating hop aroma.  Very hoppy, but not at all harsh with the hoppiness in good balance with the overall.  Very clean and easy drinking for a big IPA.

Grade: A (or better)

No picture, but now is about the time you should be grabbing your keys to go find a bottle of this one!

So when I decided to tag along on a trip to Baltimore that The Wife was taking to attend a conference, my immediate efforts were to see what my beer options would be.  Now that was not only because I love my beer, but also since it was the first weekend of the NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament and I don’t miss that for any reason.  Any sort of vacation or long weekend should not deprive me of two of my favorite things!

The pink elephant will always draw you in.

So after doing a brief internet search, I came up with what I thought would be a few good options and Max’s Taphouse was on that short list.  At that point it was just one of a handful of choices.  Then I was reading through December’s issue of Beeradvocate Magazine and saw Max’s was on their list of the 25 “Top Places to Have a Pint.”  OK, so that narrowed the list a bit further.  Then I decided to ask who ever could hear me out in the world of Twitter where I could get some good beer and watch college basketball in Baltimore.  When the immediate answer of Max’s came back it sealed the deal for my beer drinking location of choice for that trip.

That was all before I looked on the map to see that Max’s Taphouse was only a short walk away from the hotel we would be staying at!  Sometimes things just work out in your favor.

Some of the view from my seat.

The Wife and I quickly pulled up a barstool directly in front of the tap handles for the cask beer offerings on our initial visit.  The first choice for me was a (cask) Troegs Nugget Nectar and The Wife went with a Silly Pink Killer (Brasserie de Silly).  Bob was fantastic behind the bar and we felt at home even more when a patron asked if the free Miller Lite that was being offered “came with a straw like the rest of the water.”  Somewhere in my laughter at that question I briefly felt sorry for the Miller Lite girl that was pushing the freebies that afternoon.  Not the best crowd for that product, but just the type of beer drinking people I wanted to be around.

Thus began my obsession with the environment and selection at my fingertips (80 or so draft offerings and hundreds of bottled option) as I would visit Max’s each of the first three days of our stay in Baltimore. I would say that is a bad thing, but I enjoyed every moment of it!

A peek at the draft list.

To save my computer from the potential drool that would come with a beer-by-beer recap (from Gubna to Dugana to Gemeni and on), I will go with mostly pictures from here on out.  Enjoy . . .

Do yourself a favor and visit Max’s Taphouse if are in Baltimore.  Sit yourself at the bar, introduce yourself to Bob, and get yourself a good draft beer.  All will be well from there!

As promised on Tuesday for my unofficial “Lagunitas Brewing Company Week” I have another review that I have waited too long to share.  Reading back over this evaluation reminded me that I have not made the effort to drink it again as I suggested to myself at the time.  I guess not revisiting old favorites is one of the bad things about having so much good quality craft beer out there to choose from (even with so much yet that I can’t get here in Central Florida).  I cannot think of another downside to having that kind of selection, but perhaps I will put some further thought into it.

I kind of like these unofficial brewery dedicated weeks, so maybe I will throw a few in again along the way.  With that said, I bring you another Lagunitas brew to keep an eye out for . . .

Brewery: Lagunitas Brewing Co. (Petaluma, CA)

Name: Sirius (Special Release High Gravity Cream Ale)

Style: Cream Ale

ABV: 7.6%

Tasting Notes: Stored in the fridge and served in a pint glass.  9.99 per 6-pack

Aroma: Light hop aroma with a medium malty, sweet background.

Appearance: Pale gold to amber in color.  Three finger, light cream color head that dissipates rather quickly with some trail.  Crystal clear with rising bubbles visible.

Flavor: Medium hop bitterness with low malt character that is slightly sweet toward the end.  Slightly dry finish with some sweetness, though not lingering.  Well balanced overall.

Mouthfeel: Crisp and refreshing with medium to high carbonation.  Very smooth with slight warmth.

Overall Impressions: Really enjoyable, very easy drinking light(er) bodied beer with the perfect amount of hop character(s).  As expected, higher ABV than typical for style (4.2-5.6%).  I would like to compare it directly with other cream ales.  Definitely will be drinking again.

Lagunitas Brewing Co. - Sirius

On a bit of a side note (Is it still a side note if I start off with it?), I have decided to go a bit heavy on the beer reviews in the coming weeks.  Since there are so many in the back log I am going to push a few extra out there, so you will likely see more than the two a week for a short while (or longer if it works out).

With that out of the way, I can move on to another really good beer with an excellent name.  So good in fact that I think it warrants another beer review from the brewery later this week for sort of an unofficial “Lagunitas Brewing Company Week.”  I have done months, so why not weeks?  No need to delay any longer, so I bring you . . .

Brewery: Lagunitas Brewing Co. (Petaluma, CA)

Name: The Hairy Eyeball Ale

Style: Strong Ale (Old Ale?)

ABV: 8.7%

Tasting Notes: Stored in the fridge and served in a pint glass.

Aroma: Strong malty sweetness (caramel-like) with some dark fruit notes and no noticeable hops.

Appearance: Deep reddish brown color.  Very short, light brown head that slowly dissipates with some trail.  Clear with rising bubbles visible.

Flavor: Medium to high dark caramel/molasses-like malt flavor with some dark fruit that lends a port-like character.  Some warmth comes through towards end.  A sweet finish with some (carbonic) bite.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation.  Very smooth with the perfect level of alcohol warmth balanced in.

Overall Impressions: The sweetness and warmth are balanced well.  Incredibly enjoyable and a great beer to sit and relax with.  Would drink again for sure.

Lugunitas Brewing Co. - The Hairy Eyeball Ale

Continuing on with the theme of my early beer reviews on this site, I have chosen another of my favorite breweries. This happens to be the first Lagunitas that I had after deciding to write down my personal impressions. If you would like to find their beers, just look for a label that has a little dog with a black patch of fur around one eye. Sometimes its not that noticeable, but it’s there.

For those of you wondering (since I did at first), it is pronounced “lah-goo-knee-tuss.”

Brewery: Lagunitas Brewing Co. (Petaluma, CA)

Name: Cappuccino Stout

Style: American Stout (possibly Russian Imperial Stout)

ABV: 8.29%

Tasting Notes: Stored in the wine fridge and served in a pint glass.

Aroma: Some roasted malt aroma, though not extreme. No burnt character noticed. A little hint of coffee is there as well as a low hop nose.

Appearance: Dark brown with a slight red hue (when held to light). Has a two-finger high tan/café au lait head that dissipates rather quickly. Quite clear and can even see some bubbles rising despite the dark brown color.

Flavor: Strong maltiness with a slightly burnt coffee to bittersweet chocolate flavor. The hop flavor is more prominent than the aroma implies. Slight bit of alcohol noticeable. Some dryness and very slight astringency (puckering) at the finish, which does linger a bit.

Mouthfeel: Medium body (maybe slightly more full) with a bit of alcohol warmth. Low level of carbonation.

Overall Impressions: Gets much better as it warms and the very slight astringency (puckering) lessens. It was actually hoppier and not quite as malty as I expected. The coffee flavor was weaker than I thought going in (that was influenced only by reading the label). Overall it was OK, but not great (looking back not near the top of my Lagunitas brews). I would like to try it again closer to room temperature to see if my impressions change.

Grade: B (somewhere in that range)
