Is anyone else shocked that it is June already?  I am so much that it really did not occur to me until today despite yesterday being the first of the month.  Had to put that out there.

Moving quickly to the good stuff . . .

There is no one other than me that would notice when things work out perfectly on this site. That is unless I mention it, which is what I am going to do today.

With it being one of the review days here, I thought it was a very appropriate way to pay homage to the fact that today is my father’s birthday by posting an evaluation of a beer that he sent me as a gift from the homeland. I typically do not plan that far ahead so I am glad that it was still available to post. Though this was a beer that I remember hearing jokes about as I was growing up, I was ecstatic to receive the package and actually enjoyed the beer more than I thought I might going in.

Now I should also mention that though I say below that I drank the reviewed beer out of a pint glass, I did drink the remainder of them straight from the can. It just felt right!

Now for the review to close the week . . .

Brewery: Genesee Brewing Co. (Rochester, NY)

Name: Cream Ale

Style: Cream Ale

ABV: 5.10%

Tasting Notes: Stored in the fridge and served in a pint glass.

Aroma: Slight malt aroma with a very low hop nose and some sharpness (or crispness) noticeable.

Appearance: Straw to light gold in color. One finger, solid, off-white color head with decent retention and leaving a slight trail. Very clear with many rising bubbles visible.

Flavor: Moderate malt flavor (somewhat corn-like?) balanced well with a slight sweetness and a very low hop bitterness. Some dryness and sharpness at the finish.

Mouthfeel: Light body with a moderate level of carbonation. Smooth and somewhat creamy on the palate with some crispness from the carbonation.

Overall Impressions: Would drink over all domestics that come to mind (realizing that it is not a direct comparison since most of them are lagers). Refreshing with really no harshness. Definitely has sentimental value and I probably would keep some in the back of the fridge if I could get it locally.

Grade: B to B- range (likely somewhat because of sentiment)

This may not be a sad day for most people, but I am bummed out after finding out last night that Allagash will be pulling out of Florida for lack of demand.  I am not sure how soon or if it has technically happened already, but my sources are pretty reliable.  As a result I will be requiring bottles of Allagash goodness from all of my northeastern friends and relatives when they visit before I will provide them with sleeping quarters.  An Allagash shirt will be worn this evening in an effort to help me grieve.

For this week . . .

  • If only to balance out my beer universe I will lead with a few new releases from Cigar City Brewing.  If I can’t have my Allagash anymore at least I will be able to have a little José Martí, Oatmeal Raisin Cookie, and Sea Bass to help me cope.
  • I will likely have to request a few cans of Genesee beers when my family comes to visit as well.  That is not because I have not had them before, but because I really want to see what the new 24 ounce cans look like.  Thanks to Mr. S. Jim for a heads up on that new arrival!
  • Thanks to The Wife and Cousin Erin for sending me this list of beers as they well know I am a sucker for such rundowns.  Now I need to get working on trying the ones I have yet to get to on that one.
  • I really had to pass along this one not because they are yet another craft brewer that has turned to canning their beer, but because he says that they use a hand-operated filler and seamer that limits them to sealing one can at a time.  That is crazy!
  • To close this week is a little about one of the pioneers of craft beer and the collaboration brew that was recently created with someone who he inspired along the way.  Not a really long read, but definitely a good one.
