There were other ideas for the post today, but a couple of funny beer related videos will almost always find their way to the top of the list.  So that is what there is for this morning.

The first one made me laugh quite a lot and made me feel better about my own level of beer geekdom.  After watching it I am very, very glad that I am not nearly at that level and most assuredly will never be (and yes I realize that I have a beer blog).  On the other side, I have met a few people that could have been inserted into the beer geek role in this one.  That only made this more enjoyable . . .

There was no resisting the follow up to that video if only because of the absurdity that is the representation of Garrett Oliver conversing with a German accent . . .

Cheers!

The more links that I include in one of my beer news posts, the less I like to waste time (mine and yours) with an unnecessarily long lead-in to that post.  So guess what?

Moving onto the good stuff . . .

  • It seems like I have been reading about this for at least the last year or so.  As much as I like to hear about the progress they are making, just do it already.  Nice name for the act by the way.
  • Though I have never put much thought into what I drink on St. Patrick’s Day, I do associate Guinness with it because of the marketing in the US.  This article clears things up for me a bit.  How sad is it that Guinness is losing ground in Ireland to the fizzy yellow stuff?
  • If you are going to make a commitment for Lent, I would suggest taking the path that this gentleman is.
  • Pretty much everything Mr. Hindy says here makes a very good case for drinking craft beer, Brooklyn brews or otherwise.
  • If you are going to be paying attention to the Beer Madness 2011 that the Washington Post will be doing, it is a good idea to understand how it all will work.  If I lived in the area I would have certainly thrown my hat in the ring to be on the panel for the beery fun.
  • I sometimes roll my eyes at the hype that builds around certain special beer releases, but I am glad that brewers continue to push the envelope and be increasingly creative with what they brew.  It is part of what makes craft beer in the US so great.
  • Even if this beer does not sound appealing to you , I would say that it would at the very least would come across as interesting.  If anyone will be making the trip don’t be afraid to grab me a bottle!
  • From a collaboration to a new joint venture.  I really like reading about two breweries like this joining forces without bringing one of the mega breweries and distributors into the fold.  I hope that it works out really well for them both.

It is a good thing that I take clearly written notes when originally doing these reviews because my mind has wandered far away as I have been typing up this one. Somehow while staring blankly I transposed the notes I took on this beer over to this post while thinking ahead of my efforts to watch college basketball tonight via my computer. I have heard that my cable company has finally done something useful (to me) and that I might be able to now catch a game that I otherwise would have missed or simply caught on radio. Hopefully it works for me now that my hopes are high!

Now for this early in the week review . . .

Brewery: The Brooklyn Brewery (Brooklyn, NY and Utica, NY)

Name: Brown Ale

Style: American Brown Ale

ABV: 5.60%

Tasting Notes: Stored in the fridge and served in a pint glass.

Aroma: Rich, dark, malty sweetness in the aroma with some light roasted and chocolatey notes. Maybe a bit of very light hops in back?

Appearance: Deep brown color with a hint of red noticed when held to the light. One finger, light tan head that is fairly thick with decent retention and leaving some trail. Almost opaque though is very clear with rising bubbles visible when held to light.

Flavor: Full malty flavor with a nice coffee-like roasted quality and some light chocolate from middle to finish. Some bitterness from hops (in combination with that from the roasted grains) and some very light hop flavor to help balance out the malt. Somewhat dry finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation (maybe toward low). Light creaminess on the palate (more so as it warms).

Overall Impressions: Solid, tasty beer though middle of the road in that it is not great but is not at all bad either (I have a tendency to view brown ales that way). Probably not a bad one to have on hand for non-craft beer drinking friends to try. Better when not super cold.
