It was a good amount of fun reading through these stories today as they reference places from all over the country and even a bit from far, far away.  Thanks to The Mother-in-law again for passing along some good stuff.

Definitely all over the map today . . .

Sure I would like to have the first beer news post of the year include about thirty links and have many really interesting things, but not all that much caught my eye this week.  We all know that the Christmas to New Year holiday season is a black hole of productivity, so I am not all that surprised that not many big things happened.

Regardless there are a few interesting items . . .

The first sip of this one left my palate overwhelmed if not confused and left me wondering how someone came up with a recipe for this beer.  Then I learned of the Penicillin Cocktail that was the inspiration for the beer.  I do love me some scotch, but I am pretty sure that I have never enjoyed a scotch based cocktail as I prefer it left alone.  The beer certainly has a medicinal kind of cough drop quality to it so I would imagine much the same is true with the cocktail.  With all of that said, after having this beer I would still like to have the drink that inspired it if only for comparison purposes.

Closing out August with an interesting one . . .

Brewery: Brooklyn Brewery (Brooklyn, NY)

Name: The Concoction

Style: Spice Beer

ABV: 7.60%

Location: Redlight Redlight

Tasting Notes:

  • One finger off-white head that holds pretty well and leaves some nice lacing on the glass.  A somewhat hazy coppery orange color.
  • Soft earthy smokiness in the aroma with some strong herbal notes and an underlying sweetness.  A hit of citrus in there as well.
  • A full peaty smokiness up front in the flavor that stays on the palate throughout.  I get some ginger in the middle and also on the finish in combination with a good hit of lemon flavor and bitterness.
  • Medium body and a moderate level of carbonation.  Pretty smooth on the palate for all that is going on.
  • Wow, this is a unique one especially not having tried the cocktail that it was inspired by.  The characteristics that are in the aroma are much stronger and more clearly identifiable in the flavor.  Definitely a slow sipper here.  At first it was a lot to take on, but it grew on me as I drank down the glass.
