After sitting down to evaluate this beer again I took a look at the first review I did of it months ago and there are not too many differences between the two.  I am hoping that is because the beer has not changed all that much and it is not because my palate has not evolved over that time.  The thing that stays the same with each of these home brew revisits that I do is that each one reminds me how long it has been since I have brewed even one batch.  A brew day needs to find a way onto my calendar very soon.

Getting back to it after a Monday off . . .

Brewery: Blueprint Brewing (Winter Park, FL)

Name: CMS Report

Style: American Stout (if not S-H-V Beer)

ABV: 3.28% (+/-)

Tasting Notes: Stored in the fridge and pulled slightly early to warm a bit before being served in a pint glass.

Aroma: A nice, slightly sweet roasted malt aroma with notes of chocolate and seemingly a hint of herbal spiciness (root beer-like).  Not overwhelming but very nice.  – 9.5/12

Appearance: Dark, dark brown (let’s say black).  Two finger plus light brown head that is frothy with pretty good retention and leaves some lacing on the glass.  Opaque even when held to light though you can barely see through at the edges. – 3/3

Flavor: Slightly sweet roasted malt flavor up front with good notes of bittersweet chocolate after that.  Some roasted bitterness and hop bitterness from middle to finish.  There is an herbal character at the finish that is subtly menthol-like.  Light dryness on the finish with quite a bit of lingering roasted malty sweetness.  – 12.5/20

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with a high level of carbonation that lends some bite.  Smooth and somewhat creamy, but also with some astringency. – 4/5

Overall Impressions: Really good head retention actually that helps it present well.  Still a pretty good beer overall, but definitely on the way down (tasting a little old).  Has some rougher edges than I remember from before but I am surprised it has held up this well with the low ABV.  definitely enough there to try the recipe again in the future (hopefully without the boil over).  Would make some good ice cream and would pair well with chocolate cake.– 6/10

Grade: B (35/50)

Blueprint Brewing - CMS Report

So maybe I was a bit forgetful about the review status of the home brewed beer from Monday, but now I realize where I stand with those.  With that I have decided to revisit a few anyway using the newer grading system.  Without looking at the old reviews before doing these new ones I can find out if the beer has held up well, or if it might be on the downward slide.  Most of the time my beer does not stay around long enough for deterioration to be a concern, but this is a good opportunity to have a record for these.  Hopefully my palate is not biased to my own creations and can give an honest appraisal.

A long weekend awaits for some of us . . .

Brewery: Blueprint Brewing (Winter Park, FL)

Name: Off Saison

Style: Saison

ABV: 6.03% (+/-)

Tasting Notes: Stored in the fridge and served in my still broken and without a stem Ommegang glass.  Pulled very slightly early to warm a bit.

Aroma: Lightly sweet and citrusy nose up front with a subtle underlying spice character.  A really nice overall aroma that is not overwhelming. – 10/12

Appearance: Golden orange and honey-like in color.  One finger off-white head that dissipates fairly quickly and leaving some trail on the glass.  Crystal clear with rising bubbles visible. – 2.5/3

Flavor: Nice, light malt character as a base with some good citrusy fruit notes and a bit of floral character in there as well.  A low level of spice underneath.  The hop bitterness is there and in good balance with the other components.  Nice dryness on the finish with some lingering fruitiness. – 13.5/20

Mouthfeel: Medium to light in body with a moderate level of carbonation that adds some crispness.  Light creaminess initially with a hint of tartness at the finish. – 3.5/5

Overall Impressions: Carbonation is good, but it definitely use some more.  Attenuation has been my struggle with this beer and I am left again wanting a drier finish.  I have to brew this recipe again because I really have a desire to nail down a good Saison.  Might be going downhill a bit, but age has also helped this one versus when it was younger.  Even with some flaws it is still one of my favorites from my home brewing adventures. – 7.5/10

Grade: B+ (37/50)

Blueprint Brewing - Off Saison (again)

Forgetful is probably not the correct way to describe myself in the post for today, but I really had no memory of reviewing this beer previously.  Once known as Hey Sugar Sugar I went to the trouble of coming up with a (new) name for this beer thinking it did not already have one.  For a moment I thought about not posting this new review, but I am going to go ahead with it.  As this is my beer journal it would not hurt at all to revisit some of my home brews using my newer grading system to see how they compare to when I first evaluated them.

Kicking off a round of home brew reviews . . .

Brewery: Blueprint Brewing (Winter Park, FL)

Name: Dubbel Play

Style: Belgian Dubbel

ABV: 6.12% (+/-)

Tasting Notes: Stored in the fridge and served in a stemmed goblet/chalice.

Aroma: Full caramelly malt aroma with a bit of sweetness and some fruity notes that seem to be dried cherry-like.  There is a nice underlying spice profile and is really a pretty nice overall aroma. – 8.5/12

Appearance: Deep amber in color with some coppery red tones.  Two finger light tan color head with good retention and leaving nice lacing on the glass.  Mostly clear with some haze, but still with tiny rising bubbles visible. – 3/3

Flavor: A rich caramelly, brown sugary malt base with a low bitterness somewhere in the middle.  Quite a bit of fruity character (raisin, fig, etc.) with a good amount of spiciness underneath.  Finishes nicely dry with some lingering fruitiness and a bit of sugary sweetness. – 13.5/20

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with a high level of carbonation consisting of small/fine bubbles.  Nice creaminess on the palate but does have a crispness as well. – 4/5

Overall Impressions: The fruitiness in combination with the bitterness seems almost citrusy.  The flavor is much the same as the aroma, just more intense.  The beer has changed a lot (for the better) over time and the fruity character has amplified quite a bit.  Nice beer and a good recipe that needs another try.  Much better when enjoyed a little closer to room temperature.  The Wife and I pretty much agree on the final grade. – 7/10

Grade: B (36/50)
