After staring at the multiple kegs of this beer sitting on deck for weeks and weeks I was sure to stop by once it finally did go on the draft lineup. Since The In-laws were in town it was a perfect occasion to show them the bar at the same time as well. We are all about efficiency in this house!

On we go with a Saturday B Note . . .

Brewery: Terrapin Beer Company (Athens, GA)

Name: Big Daddy Vlady’s

Style: Russian Imperial Stout

ABV: 10.25%

Location: Redlight Redlight – Teege, Richard, and Dom behind the bar. With The Wife and The In-laws

Tasting Notes:

  • Dark, dark brown in color with a light tan head. Quite opaque though it was dark in the room as well.
  • Full, even roasted malty aroma with a bit of sweetness and some light chocolate notes.
  • Initial sip was a little boozy until my palate adjusted to it a bit.
  • Nice deep roasted malt flavors with some addictive roasted bitterness. A little hop flavor is noticed early, but blends into the bittersweet chocolate flavors the more I drink.
  • Medium to full body, but lighter in body than the appearance might suggest. Feels a bit thin for what I expected.
  • Not great but not bad overall and certainly smoother and more enjoyable as it warms up and the more I drink of it.

Having enjoyed a little taste of this one a few days before while at work I did not hesitate much to see how a full glass would be for me. It was definitely a big beer to start the evening with, but also a good (and warming) one. If I already had the pizza in me I don’t know that this one would have been nearly as satisfying.

On we go with the start of the week . . .

Brewery: Cigar City Brewing (Tampa, FL)

Name: Batch #69 Double Cream Ale

Style: (American) Strong Ale

ABV: 9.50% (?)

Location: Mellow Mushroom – George behind the bar. Dinner with The Wife.

Tasting Notes:

  • A hazy orange to copper color with an off-white head that dissipated pretty quickly and left a bit of a trail along the glass.
  • Honey-like sweetness and a bit of warmth in the aroma. Difficult to pick up much beyond that with the pizza in the air.
  • Medium(ish) body with a fairly low level of carbonation that combines into a pretty smooth and creamy mouthfeel.
  • Rich sweetness and some citrus notes that fades to bitterness and a nice dryness at the finish.
  • First sip was a bit strong, but it mellowed nicely as the palate adjusted. Quite enjoyable.
  • Very much like a Barleywine to me.

It is pretty clear that the list of B Notes is becoming a bit Cigar City Brewing heavy, but I am very much OK with that. I make a point to sample their seasonal offerings whenever I get the chance because I do not know when I will get a shot at them again.  Actually with the number of different releases they have done in the last year or so I cannot be certain if all of them will even see a second go at all. That would certainly make it difficult for me to try them ever again!

On we go with the start of the week.. . .

Brewery: Cigar City Brewing (Tampa, FL)

Name: Bolita Double Nut Brown Ale

Style: Northern English Brown Ale

ABV: 9.00%

Location: Redlight Redlight – Teege and Richard behind the bar.

Tasting Notes:

  • Dark, dark brown in color with a light tan head that has good retention and leaves a solid trail along glass.
  • Nice roasted malty aroma with a light sweetness.
  • Fullish body and quite smooth on the palate.
  • Really great roasted malty flavor with notes of chocolate and coffee and also a molasses-like character.
  • Some light warmth and earthiness noticeable.
  • Very solid big brown ale (though not a surprise).
