As promised in “The Plan” today is the first official “Random Thought Sunday!” It is now only a matter of time before it sweeps the nation. I can say that with confidence because my family is in Northern New York and that is technically across the country from where I am.
For whatever reason I was thinking about drinking beer (surprise, surprise) with dessert as I had some ice cream late last night. It certainly seems like a reasonable idea, but what style of beer with what type of dessert? I also know that stouts (for example) are used in chocolate cakes and such, but there have to be many dessert recipes out there using other beer styles. What a bonus that that I can eat ice cream and get a concept for a future post at the same time.
The beer and dessert thought led to thinking of cake, which made me realize that I need to make a confession . . . I am not really a cake guy. Of course I will eat it if a have to and sometimes I eat the cake without the frosting, but I cannot and will not pretend to enjoy it anymore.
I do, however, love pie! Anything involving a crust and filling is far above cake for me in the dessert universe. I love pie enough to even make it at home fairly often. I really don’t know much about baking and constructing piecrust from scratch almost always leads to loud swearing, but it is all certainly worth it.

Limey goodness
Pie is so great (even what I come up with) that it makes up for what otherwise would be inexcusable behavior. For example, if you serve homemade pie at Thanksgiving no one (still at the table) will notice or care that you are now laying on the floor next to the family dog because you ate yourself to an uncomfortable level of fullness that does not allow you to be in a seated position without severe pain. In fairness, that involves equal parts good pie and good friends like Matt, Sally, the little girl formerly known as baby Sadie, and Murphy the dog. When I figure out how to put pies in the mail, you will be the first recipients for sure!
I will leave you to enjoy the rest of your Sunday with a dessert conundrum that I have. I have clearly stated that I don’t like cake, but I (as The Wife will confirm) will run into traffic for cheesecake. Since there is no actual cake involved I consider it a form of pie that only has cake in its name because “cheesepie” doesn’t sound quite right. Is anyone with me on that?

You can lie on our floor anytime – provided you share one of your delicious pies and save some room on the carpet for me!
