Since it has been out for quite a while now this post is probably way past due here, but I have my hands full enough reviewing/evaluating beers and feel that I should leave the movie stuff to the Richard Roeper’s of the world.  Beer Wars will be the one exception, at least for now.  I thought Redlight Brent made a good point the other day when he said (basically) that everyone should watch it once; especially those who are not in the beer business and who have at least a casual interest in beer.  Since I agree with that, I thought perhaps I could convince a few extra people to watch it.

You can go to the Beer Wars website or do whatever other research you want to learn more about the person who made the movie and how it came to be since I am only going to try to hit on a few points from the content of the film.  So let’s not call it a review, but more of me giving you a reason or two why you should see it if you have not done so already.

Here we go . . .

beerwars poster small Way Past Due

First, I do have to say that I found it at least mildly funny (if not confusing) that it took someone that worked with Mike’s Hard Lemonade to make a movie like this, but I guess it makes some sense as they all go on many of the same trucks in the end.  Combine that with the fact that she says very early on that she is allergic to alcohol and does not drink any of the stuff this movie is about and you really have to look at the movie as more of one about our capitalistic system and the business of alcohol as much as, if not more so, than the world of craft beer specifically.

Short of getting to see more of the politics behind the beer business, I was aware of most of the stuff in this movie going in.  To be truthful I actually fell asleep half way through the first time trying to watch it (what a great pitch, huh), but I cannot be blamed for the lack of explosions in Beer Wars.  For those of you who just pick up your same beer at the grocery store time after time without really thinking about it, you do owe it to yourself to see Beer Wars if for no other reason than because everyone owes it to themselves to know where everything they consume comes from and how it gets to them.

In the end it still comes down to drinking what you like (and nothing should change that), but after watching this and learning how distribution works for the smaller guys and how scary the politics behind the beer industry is, you will at least start seeing the store beer displays quite differently.

As with really any documentary style film there is an agenda going in and is likely edited together accordingly, so you do have to keep that in mind as you watch this one.  I mean if I was able to pick the light beers in a blind test when I never drink them otherwise, I have to think that there is a pretty good chance at least a few people passed that little test for her.  However as with most documentaries, this one is definitely based on many truths and you can easily do the research on whatever facts you may be suspicious of.

Is it really all about innovation or should it be about excellence?  Why not both?  You can watch and decide for yourself where you fall on the conflict in the beer world of advertising and hype versus quality and character.

If you do see it or have seen it already, let me know what your thoughts are!

Brace yourself for another one of those posts where I am thinking out loud quite a bit.  Welcome again to some of the inner workings of my mind.

As I have mentioned numerous times before, this site started as a beer journal of sorts for me.  With that I think I can make the site a better overall reference for all things beer, both for myself and for everyone else who stops by.  I do not always enjoy searching around on the web or through the books on my shelves to double check one detail I am curious about so it is time for me to transition some of that information onto this site for easier access.

Doesn't it seem to have a glow?

I have no idea how long it will take to get all of what I want to do finished, but here is what I am thinking of starting with.  Not that I am at all bored and looking for extra things to do, but I think these few additions will make a great difference over time.

One thing I want to do is to tackle documenting my glassware and give it a page all to itself.  I am thinking of maybe having pictures of each type that I have and discuss what styles go in each and why.  I could also discuss which types I have not added to my collection yet, though I do not think I am missing many.  Just maybe I will even do a few pouring videos to show how I do it and perhaps also to make it possible for someone out there to tell me why they think I am not doing it correctly.

If nothing else it would help me document exactly what glassware I own before I have to move any of it to a closet somewhere to make room for the new stuff.  It will also be a good way to revisit some of the My Tasting Ways posts that I did so long ago.

Not a great photo, but a beautiful sight.

The other thing I would like to do is give descriptions of all the beer styles a permanent home on a page here.  I have to assume that many if not most people who visit this site do not have a copy of the BJCP Style Guidelines or even as many beer books lying around as I do.  I can usually just spin around in my office chair and get my hands on the answer to the beer question I am looking for.

Of course it would make no sense at all for me to merely transfer information directly from the BJCP Style Guidelines (for example).  What I would like to do is a kind of simplified summary based on what I understand from reading various references along the way.  On top of becoming a good reference here it will help me study up as I have to actually write that stuff down on my own.

This is, however, a far more daunting task than tackling a glassware rundown if only because of the numbers.  If you break down the 23 main styles of beer into all of the sub-styles, that would be 80 different styles to cover (by my count).  That is even without eventually getting to the meads (3 main, 9 total) and ciders (2 main, 9 total).  No matter how I break the task up it will take some serious time to get through.  Maybe I will draw numbers out of a hat to keep it interesting for me?

Also a beautiful sight.

On top of those two things I think I will be moving some pages and other things around to make the site easier to use and to give me more flexibility in the future.  I try to plan out my attack here, but it is often a case of making it up as I go so a few renovations now and again become necessary to keep things moving ahead smoothly.

I am not sure exactly when I will get started on those tasks, but it should be sooner than later.  Stay tuned!

Is there anything else or any other information that you would like to eventually see on this site?

College must have been so long ago now that I had forgotten the joys of working on/at something until 5 in the morning only to get up again at 7 to take care of another task.  Ah, those were the good old days that I was fortunate enough to relive a bit this week.  Somewhat troubling is that I think part of me must have missed it because I kind of enjoyed doing it again.

My thoughts for the week  . . .

  • Random thought #1 – Apparently starting your own business entity means that you also signed up for a constant stream of junk mail trying to sell you a little of everything under the sun.  I wish they would save some trees and leave me alone.
  • Random thought #2 – Knowing that there has to be a patron base to warrant a business staying open 24 hours is not enough to make a somewhat full parking lot at close to 5 in the morning seem normal.  Of course, me being awake and driving around at 5 in the morning is not that normal either.
  • Random thought #3 – Sometimes I wonder if my dog is actually watching the television or if he is just staring off into space.  Then again, I think that The Wife often wonders the same about me.
  • Random thought #4 – Taking a nap during the day is far more difficult when you are actually trying to take one.  If I am trying to read something that I really need to get through, however, there are no issues falling asleep for a while.
  • Random thought #5 – I have been sitting in a room with a television displaying a show on/about mushrooms for about 30 minutes now.  The strange part is how I don’t really like mushrooms and all that time went by before I remembered and turned the channel.

As a lead-in to the thoughts for this week there is some housekeeping to take care of in the name of full disclosure.  All good stuff though!

In an effort to spread the good word of beer and to help me sharpen my writing skills a bit, I have taken the opportunity to be the craft beer writer for The Daily City here in Orlando.  I will also be writing about architecture (and who knows what else) when the mood strikes me, but in either case I think it will be fun to help promote the good that is going on here in town.  Take this soon-to-be new addition as an example.

The other announcement is that as of tomorrow afternoon I will put my beer hobby into practice a bit by starting to work at Redlight Redlight!  I am incredibly excited and slightly nervous about the opportunity.  The nervousness will go away pretty quickly, but I am sure the excitement will stick for a long time.  I know that Redlight’s reputation can speak for itself, but beyond that it is by far my favorite beer place in town and that is more than enough reason to maintain my enthusiasm.

Now to end this week with my thoughts . . .

  • Random thought #1 – At first it was a tough decision to have to either walk a longer distance to our car via an outdoor route in extreme heat or take a bit of a shorter path through the little slice of hell that is a mall on a Saturday afternoon.  Then we realized that the extreme heat is an infinitely more enjoyable option.
  • Random thought #2 – Good food can definitely make up for poor service, but when the food is not as good as you remember it to be you start to notice things.  The more faults that become obvious, the more bummed you get about what was a favorite place of yours.
  • Random thought #3 – It nice to have the option of going to a place for a drink (or a meal) that does not have televisions in every corner and on every bare surface available.  Gregg was spot on in mentioning that this week.
  • Random thought #4 – The hours and days immediately after a haircut feel pretty damn good to me so I am not sure why the dogs have such a problem with a little trim once and a while.
  • Random thought #5 – Sure you are likely to strike out a bunch before getting the first hit, but continuing to step into the batter’s box eventually gets you something that really you want.  If not that, it at least presents you with a lot of very interesting opportunities (pitches) to consider.

Though not close to being as eagerly anticipated in my house as NFL Sundays, I really do look forward to watching the final round of major golf tournaments.  After watching for about an hour I really have the itch to go out and play a round.  Then I remember how awful I am and the craving passes.  Maybe I should start practicing.

And for this week. . . .

  • Random thought #1 – Does the person who yells “Get in the hole!” after a tee shot on a 489 yard par 4 hole really think it has a chance of going in?  After hearing the voice of a kid yell the same while watching golf this weekend I feel something must be done.  Perhaps either a shot in the shins with a 4 iron or getting buried up to your head in a bunker is a good place to start with a punishment.  We can’t have children picking up this moronic behavior.
  • Random thought #2 – How am I supposed to halve a recipe that has an odd number of eggs in it?  If only for that reason I think all recipes with eggs should have an even number of them.
  • Random thought #3 – I have difficulties watching a certain (very popular) morning show because I become irrationally enraged by seeing the large crowd of people who had nothing better to do on their vacation but to get up before dawn and wait outside to scream at a weatherman.
  • Random thought #4 – I need to find a way for one of those HGTV people to choose my house for a backyard redesign/makeover.  After Mother Nature was nice enough to wash away half of my lawn I think it is only fair to have that good fortune.  I guess I need to start shopping at the right home improvement stores.
  • Random thought #5 – Just to clarify, when you walk past a large group of people waiting outside a building only to find that the door is indeed locked because the place is not open yet, you look like an idiot.  We are not waiting outside in the 95 degree heat for fun.

I could not fall asleep last night and when I did, I did not sleep well or for long.  There has to be something that is stressing me out and making me toss and turn.  Maybe getting a few of these thoughts off my chest will make me feel better?

So for this week . . .

  • Random thought #1 – It seems that the expectation going into a week should be that the weekdays will be sunny and beautiful and the weekends will be rainy and miserable.  If I start with that assumption there will be much less disappointment come Saturday afternoon.  I should have learned this lesson long ago.
  • Random thought #2 – I think I have said this before, but the air conditioner never breaks in the middle of a workday (when we could call for repair) during September when the weather is cooling off.  It always quits working on a Saturday evening during July or August so we can fully enjoy the heat of summer.
  • Random thought #3 – I have no issues with people working when they are feeling a bit under the weather.  It takes quite a lot for me to even consider calling in sick (when I was working in an office anyway).  However, if your job is to talk on television and you have a sore throat that makes it painful for us to listen to you I would politely suggest that you stay at home.  That or at least reduce the number of stories you read until you sound better.
  • Random thought #4 – We all agree that money is pretty dirty stuff, but why is it not common to think the same about library books.  Sure George caught hell for taking a book into the bathroom while shopping in the bookstore, but no one is around to stop that from happening at home.  I am just saying.
  • Random thought #5 – There is NFL action on television tonight.  I don’t care that it is preseason and the starters will play one series at best – I am going to watch the whole damn game and will enjoy every minute of it.  There is no way that it could be more boring than watching game whatever we are at now of the baseball season.

If anyone (for whatever reason) is looking to get beer into their breakfast routine I would suggest the cake that The Wife made for my site anniversary earlier this week.  It is quite good and goes really well with your morning coffee on the weekends.  A fine way to start the day indeed.

Now then . . .

Random thought #1 – Putting aside the fact that a baseball player was hurt doing the whole shaving cream pie in the face celebration during the television interview thing as a reason to stop doing it, I have another simpler one.  It is boring and played out.  Someone needs to come up with something new and perhaps I will put some thought into coming up with that something.

Random thought #2 – When there is mystery water on the floor in the morning and I have looked into all of the obvious possibilities without determining the origin I am only left with the cats to blame.  Sure that may not actually be the reason, but it allows me to close the file on the incident in my mind.

Random thought #3 – There is nothing quite as fun as dealing with various departments within the same state government structure.  For example, I am sent my paperwork from department A and told to mail it to department B that is pretty much across the street from department A.  Then department B will make a copy of it, take my money, and send me a copy so I may then return that copy to department A that is, of course, up  the street from department B.  Did you follow that?  The long and short of it is that a month is lost simply passing papers through the mail.

Random thought #4 – It seems that the effort to structure a 17 year deal for a 27 year old hockey player (which basically gives him a cookie as payment in the last few years of the deal) could be better used elsewhere.  Perhaps start by putting together a deal that will not be rejected by the league.

Random thought #5 – So I watched a show on most extreme airports to see what ten places I never want to fly to in the future.  I do not want my airports to be extreme.  I would prefer that the runways at my destinations be much more spacious than necessary rather than have them be challenging for the pilots to deal with.

Though today is typically the spot for a rundown of the beer news for the week, I think there is one story out there that deserves an entire post focused on it.  Now what might that exclusive story for the beer news this week be?  Oh yes . . .

Today marks the one year anniversary of me starting this site!

I actually had to go back and do a little research because the date stamp on the very first post is a few days off what I remember it being (there were some issues early on).  After posting something on this site every day for the entire year, today marks the first day of the second year.  Since I enjoy it and am still having fun, I hope to continue my consecutive days posting streak throughout this year as well.

4840849277 e3e7733442 Only One Story

This will make sense after you read on.

In looking back over the last year I noticed a few things that I might not have guessed would happen going in:

  • Home brewing became a bit of an obsession.  After failing miserably with my first batch, I was able to successfully brew 12 different beers.  That is not as many as I might have liked to brew, but still something I am quite pleased with.
  • 113 beer reviews were posted on this site over the course of the year.  That is an impressive number to me, though I could have done more as I have 41 (yes I counted) still sitting in my binder ready to post.  Those numbers also don’t account for the ones consumed for a side project and those I never bothered formally evaluating at all.
  • Though I might have neglected to write about a few of them, I have been to a fair number of breweries, participated (on both sides of the table) in beer festivals, and have done quite a bit of travelling as well over the last year.
  • I walked away from my cubicle life to pursue other interests and possibilities.  That just might be the most shocking of all to me.

So you might ask how one celebrates a blogiversary (or you might ask if that is an actual word).  Well, The Wife made a trio of desserts for enjoyment this evening (and beyond) using my home brewed beer as an ingredient in each.  How awesome is that?!  You can check out the recipes here, then drool over . . .

A beer cake with bourbon-soaked raisins that is now my breakfast for the near future.

Very addicting

If you don’t hear from me for a while, it will be because I am in sugar and butter shock.

In the excitement of finishing up the first year, I have come up worth a few things I would like to do for the next year on this site.  I reserve the right to add to this list, but I would be very happy if I just got to all of these.  This list is site specific as I will surely continue with the festival and brewery visits anyway and would, of course, enjoy having some steady employment again sometime soon :) .

Here we go and in no particular order . . .

  1. As hinted at a few days ago I would like to start doing my beer evaluations closer to the BJCP guidelines.  I already use their beer score sheet to keep my notes on and use their style guidelines as reference, so it is time to start grading by points and leave the letter grading behind.  Letter grades were a fine way to start for me, but using their grading system will allow more specific evaluation and will certainly help me prepare to take the BJCP exam someday.  I might even revisit some of the beers that I have already evaluated using the new method.
  2. It would be pretty neat to write something that will be published elsewhere.  I will start with guest posting on another site or sites and go from there.  Getting others to guest post on my site is another effort that I would like to make.
  3. Evolve from mini/partial mash to all grain brewing.  Surely The Wife is excited to hear this one as it would take my brewing operation (almost entirely) out of the kitchen.  I have an excellent reference in my friend Mike and I think it is a very realistic brewing goal.  Of course I would like very much to have a kegging and draft set up to limit my future bottling efforts as well.  That will likely be first, but I want to do both.  It would also be great to get one of my friends hooked on brewing, at least so I have an extra set of hands for my all grain efforts!
  4. Do many, many more videos (reviews and otherwise) for the site.  I have the equipment to do so and if I keep practicing I might actually become competent at editing what I shoot.  I can start by posting some of the video footage that I have already.
  5. Focus on beer and food pairing if only because the relationship is interesting to me.  That topic will be on my mind all year and it would be nice to host some sort of beer pairing themed type event (desserts, cheeses, etc.) at our house before the next anniversary comes.

Five is probably a good number to stop at for now, though I also have ambitions to do more giveaways this year and to better utilize/organize/evolve my site among other things.  I did say that I would likely add to the list in the future and it probably will not take me long to do so.

4840848583 38f2c2557e Only One Story

Bourbon soaked raisins leaves raisin infused bourbon.

In closing, I would like to thank The Wife for her support and an infinite list of other things, my various content contributors across the country, the people who have been keeping up with me since the beginning, and those who have just started to follow along.  You are all entitled to have a good beer tonight (as if you needed my go ahead) in celebration.

Cheers to a great last year and to an even better year to come!

Rainy days where I am stuck inside only give my mind more time to wander.  Actually this time of year, scorching hot days really accomplish the same thing.  Either way if you take my wandering mind and combine it with my brewing books or, in this case, a book that The Wife brought home from the library and the wheels really start spinning.  If I carry through with what I am thinking about at any level she may never bring me a book again.

What I am referring to this time is that I am in the early stages of pondering the possibilities of growing my own hops.  Hey, if I ever make myself a randalizer, I would love to fill it with hops from my back yard.

4632713212 38f4def866 Stuck Inside Pondering

Peppers are great, but . . .

Before moving along too far with this thought I would like to make it known that I realized it is at least a moderately crazy idea if only because Florida is not exactly the greatest situation for hop growing.  With that said, it is not impossible.

From my (admittedly limited) understanding, hops generally grow best between roughly 35 to 55 degrees of latitude.  My location (at about 28 degrees latitude) does not meet that basic requirement.  Though I don’t know that it is true, I have read that hops have been grown in Hawaii, so I should have a shot.  For this argument I will still say that my geographic location is strike one.  With that as the first I can list some of the other hurdles I might have:

  • Soil – my sandy soil is not exactly the desired nutrient-rich mix.  That would likely affect the yield at minimum.  Maybe if I mix enough of my spent grains into the compost I can better that situation?
  • Height – The plants can grow up to 30 feet (or so).  I assume The Wife and all of my neighbors could do without that sight.  They may not grow that high, but they would certainly end up taller than our fence.  Then again, I could train them to grow horizontally along the fence.
  • Pests – Judging by the various bugs that we had in trying to grow a pesticide free vegetable garden this might be the toughest issue to overcome.  Florida may also bring some different plant diseases that the hop vines would have to deal with.
  • Me – Have I mentioned that I don’t exactly have the best record of keeping plants alive?  My thumb is not even close to a shade of green.
  • Whatever else I am not aware of at the moment.

So instead of giving up maybe I should just expect to fail many, many times before getting some variety to grow for me?  Of course I could also turn my garage into a growing room of sorts (reference the close cousin of hops) and take all of these variables out of play.  I think it would be far less expensive and intrusive to my home to just fail a bunch of times though.

4252708084 b1de5da242 Stuck Inside Pondering

Why use these when I could have fresh?

Or maybe should forget hops and just turn my entire lawn into a barley field?  I don’t like mowing that much anyway!

This is another of those posts where I am thinking as I write, so I have much more research to do before becoming legitimately serious about taking a shot at this.  The concept of having (essentially) a proprietary variety of hops that only I will brew with sounds pretty cool to me (similar to my pint glass).

Then if I could get Seattle Jeff and Syracuse Rob to grow some as well exclusively for my brewing we would have infinite brewing options via geographically remote and unique hops.

That’s enough of my hop growing train of thought for today . . . to be revisited at a later time.

It is really, really hot today.  By that I mean you go from comfortable to completely drenched in sweat after about five minutes doing anything outside.  I can’t imagine how miserable it is for our dogs, but at least they (and I) have the pool to float around in to help cool them (us) down.

Moving on . . .

Random thought #1 – I recently overheard someone explaining how to (properly) cook a pancake to someone else (at a table nearby).  I remember that mostly because I was shocked that the information was not common knowledge.  I don’t claim that my pancakes turn out perfectly, but it is really not a difficult process.

Random thought #2 – There is something that I continuously notice that we have all definitely seen and most of us have been a part of.  It amazes me the amount of people that will wait in a line at a grocery store for a free sample of (let’s say) two slices of dried banana.  Some people don’t know what they are even waiting in line for.  I hate to wait in line for anything, so I am forced to go elsewhere for my dried fruit needs.

Random thought #3 – Can someone claim to be “down to earth” when their writing uses obscure references that come across as pretentious and snooty to the majority of people (including myself)?  I would lean toward no.  I have no issue with those people, but just don’t claim to be something that you are clearly not.

Random thought #4 – When is a homerun actually an out?  Apparently after a team hits 10 homeruns in slow-pitch softball, every one thereafter is counted as an out.  What kind of rule punishes you for performing well?! Damn you ESPN for filling my brain with such information!

Random thought #5 – So I am preparing to eat my pancakes and the waitress points out the syrup options by saying (something like) “This one is molasses, that one is honey, and the one over there is maple flavored.”  My brain immediately responds (internally) “maple flavored” what?  Is it maple syrup or not?  Not liking that description I stuck with the honey for my entire meal, which turned out to be quite nice.

Granville Island Market

Cheers!

Sometimes the plans that you have for something going into the day change by the time you actually get around to doing that something.  I do have some pretty good reasons for changing my planned post topic for today to instead include a video tour (of sorts) of Terrapin Beer Company though.  For example and in no particular order . . .

  • I am feeling a bit sluggish after swimming, enduring a downpour, and doing some serious work on an all you can eat pancake offer at DeLeon Springs State Park.  There are so many pancakes in my stomach right now that I don’t even want a beer at the moment . . . which is not typical for me.
  • Terrapin Beer Company makes some really great beer and I still am thinking fondly of the awesomeness that was the randalized Hopsecutioner I enjoyed last weekend.
  • No one wants to sit in front of the computer and read a long anything on a beautiful Saturday (or at least I don’t).
  • This Thursday will, from what I can tell, be the official beginning of the second year of this site.  This week will bring the 365th consecutive day of posting here and my mind is busy pondering what I can do better over the next 365 days.  Suggestions are always welcome of course.

So those are the main reasons you get a cool little video to enjoy today.

This one is nice as a bit of an amateur version of a video brewery tour.  By that I mean that it seems that it was not done by the marketing folks at the brewery (for example).  I would say it is almost like taking the brewery tour there but I will not pretend that we are not missing out on the best part of the brewery visit.  No not the gift shop area, the beer samples enjoyed as part of the tour!

No for your viewing enjoyment . . .

Cheers to a great weekend!

Assuming that someday I will create a really nice India Pale Ale via my home brewing efforts, I must make myself one of these (among many other things) to go with it:

Randalizer

Extracting the hoppy goodness.

That beautiful set up was at Eola Wine Company recently and filled with Cascade hops to help the visitors that evening enjoy Terrapin’s Hopsecutioner in an entirely different way.  Well, at least we were told that Cascade hops were in there and based on the flavor I did believe what we were told.

If any of you are wondering what exactly you are looking at, it is a version of a randalizer.  I say version because the original “Randall the Enamel Animal” was an invention from Sam and the folks at Dogfish Head (years ago) and the picture is of one based on that original stainless steel design.  Actually it looks almost identical to the pictures I have seen of those used elsewhere, so I suppose this one could have been ordered through Dogfish.

Regardless, the vessel on top is filled with fresh hops and the beer is filtered through that mass of hops on its way to the glass.  That process essentially dry hops the beer on the spot, or perhaps more accurately fresh hops it.  The alcohol in the beer strips some of the oils from the leaves on the way through and (obviously) you end up with them in your glass.

Beer flight

The Wife went with a nice flight of craft beers.

In this case we got a more resin laced, spicy version of Hopsecutioner (in my opinion).  Nothing at all wrong with that!  The beer is great on its own, but it was nice to drink a different version of it.

That was good enough reason (for me) to be at Eola Wine Company that evening, but it was also a release event of sorts for El Wey Salsa which we received a jar of with each pint of Hopsecutioner.  How sweet a deal is that?!  I was going to enjoy the beer anyway, but some (very good) salsa as a bonus certainly did nothing to hurt our enjoyment of the evening.

El Wey Salsa

Salsa anyone?

Thanks to Emily and Ian for giving The Wife and I the heads up on the glorious combination of beer and salsa for the evening!  Also a big thank you for this . . .

Cascade Kriek Ale

Oh so tasty!

If I have not already mentioned it before, I would like to emphasize how much I enjoy having golf to watch with my morning coffee on the weekends.  If only for that reason The Open Championship moves to the top of the list of my favorite tournaments.

Enough of that . . .

Random thought #1 – I am sorry (though just a little bit), but the kids in the outfield at the MLB home run derby are just awful!  Shouldn’t they have to demonstrate that they can catch a fly ball or at least get in front of a grounder before being allowed out there?  I was waiting for one of them to get hit in the face with the ball.

Random thought #2 – I hate when I am eating something crunchy (say potato chips) and I have to turn up the television quite a lot just to hear what I am watching.

Random thought #3 – Realizing that this is a Florida issue, why does the weather report always say that it will be in the low 90s but feel like it is in the low 100s?  I would prefer it be something like “It will be in the low 90s, but you might want to bring a light jacket with you.”  That would be nice to hear now and again.

Random thought #4 – Where exactly are the four corners of the world?  All this time I thought the planet was round(ish) and did not have corners, but maybe I have been mislead.

Random thought #5 – There are many subspecies of man that I notice while attending very boring seminars.  I say man because women have more than enough sense not to act like this.  Here are a few examples of those who make the sessions last longer than they need to:

  • There is always a guy that thinks he knows more than the presenter and wants to make sure that everyone else in the room thinks so as well so he never raises his hands and just interjects freely.  It would be nice if he use some restraint because very often his point is covered two slides later.
  • There is also often the “I want to make sure to tell a story regardless of its relevance to the current conversation/topic guy.”  This one usually leaves me in a fog for a few moments while I try to figure out what just happened.

Cheers!

As always, traveling provides me some moments of complete confusion along the way.  However, when away from home I am even worse about writing those things down as they happen.  The rundown below is what I was able to remember after a nice cup of coffee this morning.

So for this travel heavy week I have . . .

Random thought #1 – Sleeping on planes never really works out well for me, even when it is an overnight flight.  Usually that means I am somewhat worthless for a good portion of the next day.  With that said, I felt terrible for the woman who had a crying baby on her lap (a few seats away from us) for what seemed to be the entire red eye flight back from the west coast.  There was definitely no sleep for her.

Random thought #2 – In general I really dislike waiting in lines, but especially when I don’t know why I am waiting so long.  All I ask is a little update on why I haven’t moved in fifteen minutes.

Random thought #3 – In a similar (yet completely different) way as casinos, airports are a very fascinating place to sit back and watch people do what they do.  If I sit at the airport in Vegas I could get both environments wrapped into one.

Random thought #4 – How do you know when it would be a good idea to move to a city?  More specifically, how many times do you have to visit a city and enjoy your time there before moving there seems like the correct choice.  You always have fun when on vacation, but maybe when you go to the same place multiple times and miss it afterward it may mean something more.

Random thought #5 – Sort of on that train of thought, the possibility that our house is trying to send a message to us is growing stronger.  Each time we both leave for more than a few days we return to something broken or not operating properly.  So from that I can only gather that either the house wants us to sell it and move away or that it wants to punish us for leaving it alone.

Proost!

Today is somewhat different than the typical Sunday since the list that you are about to read really is not one of random thoughts at all.  These are not thoughts that just bubbled up this week.  The pressure relief valve on my brain was about to be worked if I did not finally address these issues to make myself feel better.

Before moving on to my little rants, I must say that I am never one to tell people what they should eat or drink.  I simply pass along my opinions, whether they are of use or interest is up to the reader.  I will always encourage people to step out of their beer and food comfort zones and try new things, but that is really as far as I go.  This post is simply to air what is my disgust/confusion about the marketing geniuses working for those big domestic breweries to make these funny commercials of theirs.  You can even make a game of “Guess That Commercial” out of this.

I am starting to feel better already . . .

Not-So-Random thought #1 – I have yet to meet a person who would willingly pay money for a food or drink item that they did not think tasted good.  Who out there does not care about taste?!  Continuing to see an entire ad campaign based on a concept as stupid as that makes me want to vomit.  That is my rant without even mentioning that the product they are schilling is not exactly bursting with flavor itself.

Not-So-Random thought #2 – Taking a different approach than I did in #1, I will ignore for a moment the ridiculous premise behind this next commercial to just ask  a simple question.  Has any female appreciating man in the history of the universe chosen any single beer (light or otherwise) over an attractive woman?

Not-So-Random thought #3 – So passing up a 64 calorie bottle of faint yellow sparkling water for bottle of 95 calorie club soda with slightly more flavor means you have to exercise in the middle of the party like a complete ass?  I have friends that as hard as they would kick my ass for drinking a 95 calorie beer, it would only be a limp wristed slap in comparison to what they would do if I told them a 95 calorie beer was too heavy for me.

Not-So-Random thought #4 – Lance, you burn about 4 million calories per day training.  It will not hurt you to drink an actual beer now and then.  You get plenty of water during your workouts.  Carry on.

Not-So-Random thought #5 – Since when did drinking light beer become the “manly” thing to do?  There is no problem with drinking light beer, but don’t give me this garbage about how doing so makes a guy more masculine and attractive.  In case I am wrong I will keep my ears open at the bar for the next lady that says “Hey check out that one over there drinking the light domestic beer.”

I feel much better now . . . thank you.
