The judging for the brewery internship competition begins tomorrow.  If you haven’t done so already check out my entry, rate my video (high) if you like it, and keep your fingers crossed for an announcement of victory down the line!

It had to be done.  I was in no hurry to post my review for this one, but there are so many commercials running for it that it seemed an appropriate time.

It’s nice to have a new Guinness product to try, but it has a lot to live up to with that name.  I expected it to be different than regular old Guinness and it was, but not in a good way.  They used a few different types of malt that gave it a different character than what we are used to with a Guinness.  It was sure to be compared to the Guinness we all know (and most of us love) and I wanted it to be something more special than the original (with such a big anniversary and all), but it just wasn’t.  Even if this one were staying on the market for a long while I would be sticking with Guinness Draught.

Brewery: St. James’s Gate Brewery (Ireland)

Name: Guinness 250th Anniversary Stout

Style: Dry Stout

ABV: 5.0%

Tasting Notes: Stored in the wine fridge and served in a pint glass.

Aroma: Some roasted barley/malt aroma but not too much.  No real hop aroma.  Slight metallic note.

Appearance: Deep drown to black in color with some reddish tint at the edges.  Four (plus) finger, light coffee color head that has great retention and a heavy trail.  All but opaque.

Flavor: Some roasted grain with a hint of bitterness and some sharpness.  Some cloying with the finish.  Better as it warms, but not much flavor overall.

Mouthfeel: Medium body (lighter than appearance would suggest).  Slight creaminess and some astringency at finish.

Overall Impressions: Not nearly as enjoyable as regular old Guinness Draught.  Glad to try, but no need to have again.

Grade: C (maybe C+)
