So maybe I was unsure of which day of the week it was yesterday, but I do know what month it is. Since it is May and since the BJCP Style Guidelines indicate “The serving of Maibock is specifically associated with springtime and the month of May,” I figure posting a review for one is pretty appropriate. It also is a newer review to balance out the older one posted earlier this week (and without a picture).
I am glad that we get a lot of good Colorado beers here in Florida since I am not much of a skier and that takes away half the reason to actually visit the state. For those keeping track (as I am), The Wife really enjoyed this one and gave it somewhere in the range of A- to A.
Brewery: Fort Collins Brewery (Fort Collins, CO)
Name: Maibock
Style: Maibock / Helles Bock
ABV: Not exactly sure, so feel free to let me know.
Tasting Notes: Stored in the fridge and served in a pilsner glass.
Aroma: Strong (though not overwhelming) dark fruit sweetness (date-like). The sweetness also had some brown sugary quality to it.
Appearance: Rich amber color. Short, light caramel color head with good retention and a solid trail. Clear with tons of tiny rising bubbles visible.
Flavor: Smooth, sweet maltiness with a bit of toasted flavor. Light hop flavor toward middle with a slight bitterness toward the finish. The finish is slightly dry, but quite clean with no real lingering flavors. Nice balance of all components.
Mouthfeel: Medium to light body with moderate (or higher) carbonation that gives some bite. Really smooth and pretty clean drinking. Some light warmth noticed with and after finish.
Overall Impressions: Very easy to drink with good flavor(s) throughout that build while drinking. I generally enjoy this style as a spring seasonal. Better when quite cold versus when it warms.
Grade: B+
