With the majority of a long weekend remaining, I think this is not a bad beer to grab a six pack of if you are looking to fill out a cooler at any point.  Now the six pack that I reviewed this beer from was actually given to me via working at a beer festival, but I have enjoyed it on many other occasions.  I consider it to be a pretty good beer to sit in the back yard with while grilling or playing horseshoes or whatever, especially when in the company of some of your friends from Colorado.  Actually, now that I think of it, you cannot really go wrong with getting your craft beer from breweries in Boulder or from anywhere else in Colorado.

For the somewhat rare Saturday review . . .

Brewery: Boulder Beer Company (Boulder, CO)

Name: Hazed & Infused

Style: American Pale Ale

ABV: 4.85%

Tasting Notes: Stored in the fridge (for about a half day or so) and served in a pint glass.

Aroma: Full and smooth piney, slightly citrusy hop aroma with a bit of underlying sweetness.

Appearance: Light to medium amber color.  One finger, off-white head that is frothy with good retention and that leaves a heavy trail.  Very clear with tons of tiny rising bubbles visible.

Flavor: Even citrusy hop flavor with a very low level of malty sweetness in back.  Light hop bitterness and some very slight dryness at the finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium to light body with a high level of carbonation.  Somewhat creamy and smooth on the palate.

Overall Impressions: Flavor is quite a bit milder than the aroma.  Pretty clean and smooth drinking (enjoyable) and probably a good starting point for those who don’t (or think they don’t) like really hoppy beers.

Grade: B(ish)

The close up.

My memory tells me that this one made it into the house via choice of The Wife, which makes sense since I do not often purchase fruit beers on my own to take home for whatever reason.  Short of a few pumpkin brews in the next few months I do not foresee much in the way of fruit or vegetable beers coming home until well after the first of the year.  I am definitely ready for some of the heavier fall and winter seasonals that will be coming soon.

This turned out to be pretty refreshing and a very easy drinking beer, though it probably should be at 4% ABV.  The Wife enjoyed it quite a lot, as my notes indicate that she gave it an A.

Now for this Friday . . .

Brewery: Eel River Brewing Co. (Scotia, CA)

Name: Açai Berry Wheat

Style: Fruit Beer (based on American Wheat?)

ABV: 4.00%

Tasting Notes: Stored in the fridge and served in a pint glass.  $4.49 for a 22 ounce bottle.  USDA Organic and Certified Organic by CCOF.

Aroma: Low, but prominent berry aroma with a bit of grainy sweetness.

Appearance: Pale golden color (honey-like).  One finger, frothy, white head with decent retention leaving no trail.  Very clear with tons of small rising bubbles visible.

Flavor: Low grainy flavor with a faint fruit/berry character underneath and some very slight sharpness at the finish.  Not strong overall flavor profile, but nothing bad either.

Mouthfeel: Light body with a moderate to high level of carbonation that gives a little bite.  Slightly creamy and pretty crisp.

Overall Impressions: Not great, but not bad . . . especially with my mixed results/feelings on organic beers in the past.  Would drink well ice cold sitting under the sun somewhere.  Does this qualify as getting some antioxidants?!

A close up.

The credit for the beer news this week goes to a handful of people.  I had stories passed to me by The Wife, Seattle Jeff, MomJovi, and Erin my Midwestern Beer Correspondent.  Since they did the hard part, all I really had to do was sit back and read through it all.  It turned out to be a pretty varied collection of articles.

Much to get to . . .

  • Knowing that I cannot sing even a little bit or play anything, I am glad to find out that there is help out there for me to play a little tune while kicking back with a beer.
  • As a general piece of advice I would recommend that if you are charged with keeping track of something worth upwards of a million dollars, maybe you should take the night off from hitting the bar.  Sure a beer or two is acceptable, but do yourself a favor by not starting a tab.
  • I had to pass along that advice before linking to this story telling you that drinking could help you live longer.  That may trump my recommendation, but doing what is necessary to track of the valuables is still a good idea.
  • I like the idea of having a guide like this to assist my decision making and directions when travelling to other states.  My hunch is that it would not take as long to put together a version of this for Florida.
  • In the spirit of at least somewhat cancelling out the possibility of drinking beer lengthening your lifespan, I present you with a deep fried version.  Who knew that a liquid could be fried like that?
  • You all know that I am a sucker for lists and this one hits on a perfect combination (for me) of beer and travel.  I will have the push pins in the map moments after I complete writing this post.
  • I defy you to not watch a video of an animal drinking (and enjoying) a few beers.  There is also a bonus of a bad joke at the end.
  • To close the week, an article that highlights some reverse engineering of sorts via Dogfish Head’s musically inspired Bitches Brew.  There is a pretty good chance that I won’t get to try this one, so I like to read reactions from the folks who do get to.
