As a continuation of my grieving for Allagash no longer being distributed in Florida, I thought this video was a good one to share today.  The Wife and I visited the brewery just before they finished building the koelschip addition to the facility, so this I found this to be pretty interesting.  Chances are that I would push for another visit next time we are in Maine anyway, but using that feature as an excuse certainly helps my case.

Enjoy seeing the lead up to spontaneous fermentation . . .

This one of my home brews is of a style that I have definite plans to brew again at some point.  That is partly because I think I can do much better, but mostly because it is a style that I really enjoy drinking and especially in the summer months.  Just this week I was chatting with a guy visiting from California that gave me some really good tips on brewing a Saison, right down to the yeast he would suggest using.  Having that random conversation seems to be a message to me that I need to take another shot at it sooner than later.  I may never end of with something nearly as good as Hennepin, but I would like to keep trying.

Now on to the last of my home brew reviews for now . . .

Brewery: Blueprint Brewing (Winter Park, FL)

Name: Sai What?!

Style: Saison

ABV: 5.92% (+/-)

Tasting Notes: Stored in the fridge and served in my (now without stem) Ommegang glass.  Definitely the first and perhaps the only beer that I brew that will have an interrobang in the name.

Aroma: Mildly sweet (honey and citrus), fruity aroma with a low level of spice.

Appearance: Orange/honey in color.  Slight white head that quickly dissipates with some trail.  Somewhat hazy though rising bubbles are (barely) visible.

Flavor: Nice (somewhat sugary) sweetness up front with a very low hop bitterness and some light citrusy (lemon) notes.  Low herbal character in back (toward finish) with some slight dryness at the finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium to light body with moderate to low levels of carbonation.  Smooth and slightly crisp.

Overall Impressions: Not bad as my first try at the style and certainly good enough to give it another attempt.  I would like it to have some more carbonation and perhaps I will experiment with different yeast on the next try.  Better after it warms just a bit.

Grade: B-(ish)

A little closer now

This may not be a sad day for most people, but I am bummed out after finding out last night that Allagash will be pulling out of Florida for lack of demand.  I am not sure how soon or if it has technically happened already, but my sources are pretty reliable.  As a result I will be requiring bottles of Allagash goodness from all of my northeastern friends and relatives when they visit before I will provide them with sleeping quarters.  An Allagash shirt will be worn this evening in an effort to help me grieve.

For this week . . .

  • If only to balance out my beer universe I will lead with a few new releases from Cigar City Brewing.  If I can’t have my Allagash anymore at least I will be able to have a little José Martí, Oatmeal Raisin Cookie, and Sea Bass to help me cope.
  • I will likely have to request a few cans of Genesee beers when my family comes to visit as well.  That is not because I have not had them before, but because I really want to see what the new 24 ounce cans look like.  Thanks to Mr. S. Jim for a heads up on that new arrival!
  • Thanks to The Wife and Cousin Erin for sending me this list of beers as they well know I am a sucker for such rundowns.  Now I need to get working on trying the ones I have yet to get to on that one.
  • I really had to pass along this one not because they are yet another craft brewer that has turned to canning their beer, but because he says that they use a hand-operated filler and seamer that limits them to sealing one can at a time.  That is crazy!
  • To close this week is a little about one of the pioneers of craft beer and the collaboration brew that was recently created with someone who he inspired along the way.  Not a really long read, but definitely a good one.
